Soo Lin Yao is a Chinese pottery expert. She was formerly employed by the National Antiquities Museum in London. Her job at the museum was to look after several tea sets and perform tea ceremonies to groups of visitors.
In the episode, The Blind Banker, she was first seen pouring tea and explaining the details to a group of visitors at the museum. Whilst packing it away she explained the tea set in more detail to Andy Galbraith, another member of staff. It is suggested that Andy has a crush on her when he asked if she would like to go for a drink with him. Her response to his advances was quite unusual and cryptic, as she told him to "please stop asking". This is the first suggestion that there is something darker going on and she may not be all she seems.
Soo Lin was seen some time later in the now darker museum where she was just finishing putting the tea set away. She heard a noise and went to investigate where she pulled the sheet covering a statue and saw something that scared her. The next day, another member of the staff, supposedly Soo Lin and Andy's boss, asked Andy to go and examine a new piece the museum wants to buy. He suggested that Soo Lin was more knowledgeable in that area of antiquities and was told that she quit the night before. This is the confirmation that she must be somehow involved with the case that Sherlock Holmes and Doctor John Watson were investigating. Sherlock discovered her involvement when he found an unopened Yellow Pages outside her apartment, on entering the apartment he was attacked by her brother, he then realized he must find her as she may be part of the case.
Sherlock and John required Soo Lin's assistance to discover the meaning of the cypher. When they discovered she was hiding in the museum from the murderer that had already killed Lukis and Van Coon. She was able to tell them that all the smuggler network knows the translation and that Zhi Zhu (the spider), her brother, was part of the Black Lotus gang and that he was being controlled by a General Shan. Later, she is shot by her brother in the museum but managed to translate two of the words in the message before collapsing, 'Nine Mill'. Why Liang [Zhi Zhu] left before verifying that his sister actually died is a mystery, but thanks to the quick action of the Doctor Watson, Soo Lin survived.
